I Thought This Was Just What Getting Older Felt Like.
Meet Maryann Thomas, DNP, FNP-C, AFMC, FMACP
Founder of Calm Shores Integrative Wellness
I know what it's like to experience changes in your health, search for answers, and eventually begin to believe that how you're feeling is simply something you have to accept.
For years, I struggled with symptoms I couldn't fully explain. My lab results were normal, the explanations I received didn't seem to account for everything I was experiencing, and despite my own efforts, I wasn't feeling better.
Eventually, I stopped expecting things to change.
But my perspective began to shift when I saw a family member find answers through a different approach to healthcare. That experience sparked my interest in functional medicine and a desire to understand not just how to manage symptoms, but what might be contributing to them.
My own journey through perimenopause and menopause, and eventually finding a specialist who listened and included me in decisions about my care, reinforced why that approach matters to me.
Today, those experiences influence how I care for women at Calm Shores Integrative Wellness.
Because I believe your concerns deserve thoughtful evaluation, your questions deserve answers, and your voice belongs in decisions about your health.

I Knew Something Wasn't Right

When I returned to school at 40 to become a nurse, I was also navigating changes in my own health.
My periods became so heavy that I sometimes bled through my clothes. I was exhausted, anxious, emotional, and gaining weight.
When I sought help, my lab results were normal, and I was offered medication that came with its own side effects. My weight gain was attributed to the demands of being in school.
But I was still struggling with the same symptoms, and I didn't feel that anyone was looking at the bigger picture.
I wasn't looking for someone to agree with everything I thought. I wanted someone to take my concerns seriously and help me understand what was happening.
So I tried to figure it out myself.
I focused on nutrition and physical activity, believing that perhaps I needed to make changes in my lifestyle. But despite my efforts, I continued struggling.
Eventually, I began to believe this was simply what getting older felt like.
The Symptoms Changed, but the Frustration Didn't
When menopause arrived, sleep became a nightly challenge. Some nights I couldn't fall asleep. Other nights I woke up and lay awake for hours.
I was anxious, exhausted, easily brought to tears, and had less patience than I was accustomed to.
And I was having hot flashes, although I didn't recognize them at first.
I wasn't drenched in sweat or turning bright red. I was hot one minute and freezing the next. I felt like I was constantly adjusting my clothing and my surroundings just to be comfortable.
It was a roller coaster I couldn't get off.
I didn't feel like myself, and I didn't understand why.
What Changed My Perspective

For a long time, I had accepted that the changes I was experiencing were simply part of getting older.
Then a family member sought care from a naturopathic doctor and began finding answers to health concerns they had been struggling with. As their health improved, I became curious about an approach that looked beyond individual symptoms to better understand what might be contributing to them.
It challenged something I had come to accept: that managing symptoms was sometimes the only option.
I began studying functional medicine because I wanted to understand more. I wanted to ask different questions, explore the connections between symptoms and underlying health factors, and better understand why someone was experiencing what they were experiencing.
I realized there might be another way to approach care, one that didn't stop at identifying and managing symptoms but also explored what could be contributing to them.
That curiosity changed the direction of my professional interests and ultimately helped shape the vision for Calm Shores Integrative Wellness.
What Finally Made the Difference

Eventually, I saw a specialist who recognized my symptoms.
She asked questions. She listened. She helped me understand what I was experiencing.
And something happened that had been missing from my earlier appointments.
She asked what I thought.
We discussed my concerns, explored the options, and developed a treatment plan together.
I wasn't simply being told what to do. I was part of the decision.
With time and appropriate treatment, I began feeling like myself again.
That experience reinforced something I believe every woman deserves: a healthcare partnership where her concerns are taken seriously, her questions are welcomed, and her voice matters.
“She asked what I thought.”
Why I Created Calm Shores
Throughout more than a decade of clinical practice, I've seen how easily complex health concerns can become separated into individual symptoms, laboratory results, or diagnoses.
My interest in functional medicine grew from wanting to understand the connections. What might be contributing to a symptom? How do hormonal changes, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, sleep, stress, and lifestyle influence one another? What does the evidence tell us, and what questions still need to be answered?
My own experience reminded me why those questions matter.
At Calm Shores Integrative Wellness, I bring together my clinical experience, advanced functional medicine training, and personal understanding of perimenopause and menopause to offer a more thoughtful, individualized approach.
That doesn't mean assuming every symptom is hormonal or that every concern has one underlying cause.
It means listening carefully, considering the whole picture, evaluating what may be contributing to your concerns, and explaining the reasoning behind appropriate options.
It also means recognizing that your experiences, preferences, and goals belong in the conversation.
I don't believe good healthcare is about making decisions for you. I believe it's about bringing clinical knowledge and your lived experience together to make informed decisions with you.
Your Health. Your Voice. Our Partnership.
You don't have to arrive with all the answers.
You don't have to know whether what you're experiencing is related to perimenopause, menopause, or something else.
And you don't have to apologize for wanting to understand what's happening in your body.
My goal is to create a space where you can ask questions, explore your options, and participate in developing a plan that reflects your individual needs.
Because I know what it's like to search for answers.
And I know the difference it makes when someone finally listens.
